Durant back in province as Hilltops guest speaker

Former Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s quarterbac­k Darian Durant will be appearing as a guest speaker at the Saskatoon Hilltops End Zone Scholarshi­p Dinner on Saturday.

The dinner, which takes place at 5:15 p.m. at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex, will precede the Hilltops game against the Regina Thunder at 7 p.m. at SMF Field. Single tickets are on sale at www. saskatoonh­illtops.com for $100 with net proceeds going to Hilltops scholarshi­ps and bursaries.

Blades end pre-season with 6-1 record

The Saskatoon Blades finally lost in the pre-season, in their final game. Saskatoon dropped a 5-2 decision to the host Prince Albert Raiders Saturday. The Blades finish the pre-season with a 6-1 record.

Emil Malysjev and Aidan De La Gorgendier­e were the goal scorers for the Blades. Brett Leason and Spencer Moe had two goals each for the Raiders while Max Martin added the other. The Blades begin the regular season Friday with a game in Swift Current.

Weekend roundup of Huskies athletics

Courtney Hufsmith led the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies in their first track meet of the year. The third-year Huskie finished more than two minutes ahead of her closest rival in the women’s cross-country run at the Cougar Trot in Regina Saturday. Hillary Mehlhorn finished third. Jared Welsh was the top Huskie, in 8th place, in the men’s race.

In women’s soccer, rookie Payton Izsak’s first goal helped the Huskies to a 1-1 draw with the Macewan Griffins in Edmonton Friday. On Sunday the Huskies had a 2-2 draw with the host UNBC Timberwolv­es. Huskies goal scorers were Cassidy Hayward and Taneil Gay.

In men’s soccer, three secondhalf UBC Thunderbir­ds goals accounted for all the scoring in a 3-0 shutout of the host Huskies on Saturday. One day later, the Huskies lost 3-0 again, this time to the UNBC Timberwolv­es.
