Huskies beat rival Rams on football field

The University of Saskatchew­an Huskies football team got the better of their provincial rival Regina Rams with a 33-20 win in Canada West football action at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon on Friday.

The Huskies built a 30-3 lead midway through the third quarter before the Rams mounted a comeback.

Saskatchew­an’s Colton Klassen scored on receptions of 14 and 12 yards, and compiled six catches for 99 yards. Saskatchew­an also got a 64-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown from Jacob Solie, an eight-yard TD reception from Jesse Kuntz, and a 26-yard Sean Stenger field goal.

The Rams got touchdown runs of two and 27 yards from Kyle Borsa, who racked up 96 ground yards. Aldo Galvan added field goals of 11 and 17 yards, and Kyle Moortgat caught seven balls for 112 yards.

Kyle Siemens completed 23 of 33 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and an intercepti­on. Noah Picton, behind centre for the Rams, finished 21 of 34 for 271 yards and three intercepti­ons. The Huskies improve to 3-1 while the Rams drop to 2-2.

On the soccer pitch, the host Huskies women’s team dropped a 2-1 game to the Alberta Pandas on Saturday before being shut out 3-0 by the Mount Royal Cougars on Sunday. Payton Izsak scored the lone goal for the Huskies on the weekend, who fall to 0-2-4.

On the men’s soccer side, the visiting Huskies controlled much of their game against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, but gave up the only goal of the game in the 89th minute to lose 1-0 in Abbotsford. Canada West leading scorer Atle Koellmel marked his seventh of the season on a free kick for UFV. On Sunday, the Huskies came away with a 1-1 tie against the host UBC Okanagan Heat. Jakob Rogowski’s Huskies goal in the 14th minute was countered by Shaun Pilcher in the 30th minute for the Heat. The Huskies return home with a 2-5-1 record.
