RCMP worthy of veterans’ plates

-

This is in response to “RCMP shouldn’t get veterans plates” by Dean Rochon (SP, Aug 25).

Mr. Rochon makes it sound like a soft and safe job compared to the military. He said that “they get to wear bulletproof vests in their own country, they make good money, they go to work and come home when their work is done.”

I disagree.

Police officers and their families know that the officer may not return at the end of the day.

Even a routine traffic stop can end in tragedy. A deranged person with a gun can end a career suddenly.

A soldier faces great danger during a tour of duty in a war zone.

Every police officer spends an entire career facing danger in a different type of war zone.

The war on crime is neverending.

Both forces deserve recognition.

Having grown up on a military base, I know that most military personnel go to work and come home at the end of the day. They are all necessary and deserve to display this plate.

The RCMP deserves the right to stand with them and do the same.

In closing, I would suggest that Mr. Rochon go to the RCMP Training Depot in Regina and spend some time at the memorial displaying the names of the officers who have died in the line of duty. He should read the names and solemnly reflect upon the sacrifices they have made. Dal Proudlove, Saskatoon
