Huskie men’s hockey team tops Alberta Golden Bears

- DON RICE

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie men’s hockey team got a small measure of revenge over their arch rival Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night with a 5-2 win in the season opener. The Huskies lost out to the Bears in last year’s Canada West Final and U Sports semifinal, but were able to spoil the banner raising night for the hometown Bears in Edmonton. The win also snaps the Bears’ 18-game home winning streak.

Kohl Bauml, Tanner Lishchynsky, Logan Mcveigh, Jordan Tkatch and Jaimen Yakubowski all scored for the Huskies. Taran Kozun made 30 saves to earn his fifth career Canada West win. Cole Sanford and Curtis Miske scored for the Bears, who let a 2-0 early second-period lead slip away.

The two rivals finished their weekend series with a game on Sunday night, but results were not available at press deadline.

In football action, the sixthranked Huskies dropped a 33-13 decision to the No. 3 ranked Calgary Dinos in Calgary on Saturday. Calgary led 23-3 at halftime, but the Huskies closed to within 23-13 after three quarters before the Dinos sealed the game in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Siemens was 21 of 40 for 297 yards as Huskie quarterback. Jesse Kuntz hauled in six of those passes for 87 yards while Carter Dahl had 93 yards on three receptions. Mason Nyhus scored the lone Huskie touchdown on a one-yard plunge while Sean Stenger added two field goals.

Calgary quarterback Adam Sinagra threw for 432 yards and four touchdowns on the day. Alex Basilis and Dallas Boath each had five catches for 116 and 55 yards, respectively. Saskatchewan falls to 3-2 with both losses coming to 5-0 Calgary. The Huskies are tied for second with the Regina Rams, who edged the Manitoba Bisons 32-31 on Saturday.

Courtney Hufsmith led the Huskies cross-country team with a decisive win in the 8 km women’s event at the Sled Dog Open hosted by the Huskies in Victoria Park on Saturday. Hufsmith led from start to finish, crossing the finish line in a time of 28:06, two minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Meghan Manor of the Calgary Dinos. The third year Huskie has won both of her races in dominant fashion this season. In the men’s race, Jared Welsh was the top Dog with a time of 26:37 in 22nd place.

On the soccer pitch, the Huskie men defeated the host Macewan Griffins 2-0 on Saturday. Gabriel Buatois scored for the Huskies while the Griffins also surrendered an own goal. On Sunday, the Huskies, who now have a record of 3-6-1, lost 4-0 to the host Alberta Golden Bears.

Meanwhile, the Huskie women’s soccer team dropped both of their weekend matches. They were shut out 4-0 in Calgary by the Dinos on Saturday before falling 2-1 in Lethbridge to the Pronghorns. The Huskies are still searching for their first win of the season and are 0-4-4.
