Nine-storey Complex proposed on Broadway
A Saskatoon developer is planning an apartment tower for the corner lot on Broadway Avenue that used to be the home of the Royal Bank.
A rendering on the website of Baydo Development Corporation shows a seven-storey apartment tower above two floors of commercial and office space on the corner of Broadway and Main Street.
Baydo is seeking approval from the city to build a structure with an awning that extends 1.7 metres over the existing sidewalks along Broadway and Main.
The request will first be considered by city council’s transportation committee on Tuesday, but the final decision will rest with city council.
Nutana Community Association president Catherine Folkersen said the project does not require rezoning, so no public consultations are required. She said she has not heard from Nutana residents about the proposed tower.
“It has been quiet,” Folkersen said in an email.
Baydo officials could not be reached for comment.
The request comes as a new 17-storey condominium tower is proposed three blocks north on Broadway near the top of the Broadway Bridge.
That condo tower, planned by Saskatoon’s Victory Majors Development Corp. and Urban Capital from Toronto, will be discussed at a public meeting at Nutana Collegiate at 7 p.m. Wednesday. That project requires rezoning to proceed.
The lot at Broadway and Main was used as a paid parking lot after the demolition of the former Royal Bank building until a fence was erected around the property earlier this year.
The drawings submitted to city hall seeking permission for the awning show a space behind the building for parking.
Several development proposals in the Broadway district have attracted attention. A proposal to convert a site along University Avenue where a church is located generated significant opposition.
City council voted unanimously to allow rezoning at that location in November 2017 so the project could proceed.
