MIRROR, MIRROR
CUSTOMIZED SKIN CARE SOLUTIONS THAT REALLY WORK
Is your mirror making you unhappy? Have you resigned yourself to living with troubled skin because the endless array of “miracle” creams, lotions and potions you’ve purchased haven’t produced results?
Saskatoon family physician Dr. Coby Demkiw-Bartel has felt those same frustrations, looking for solutions to skin care problems that she began to experience in her 20s, including adult acne, hyperpigmentation, allergic irritation and signs of aging.
She personally investigated over 80 lines of skin care products and found “nothing really ever worked. Even prescription items were very harsh, problematic in some way or just not efficacious.”
Dr. Demkiw-Bartel set out to find effective skin care solutions, drawing on her unique clinical expertise as a laboratory technologist, pharmacist and a family physician with a special interest in dermatology.
During her three decades of extensive research, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel has identified select medical grade skin care products and treatments that she has determined really live up to their claims.
To help others achieve their quest for healthier skin, Dr. Demkiw-Bartel founded “The SheDoc.com”, independent of her family medical practice. The website offers extensive details about the skin care treatments and products that she has found to be most effective.
Researching the latest advances in skin care remains Dr. Demkiw-Bartel’s passion. She has recently introduced a new skin care treatment to her patients: a medical-grade microneedling system.
“Microneedling naturally stimulates your skin’s own cells to produce more collagen and renew itself,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel.
The microneedling device is a roller made of surgical steel. “In combination with the stimulation created by the roller, we are able to deliver super serums deep into the skin. These are pure plant-based stem cells, hyaluronic acid and peptides that get results.”
She refers to a recent research study published in Dermatologic Surgery, the official publication of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, that confirms the “efficacy and safety of microneedling for the treatment of scars, acne, melasma (brown spots), photorejuvenation, hyperhidrosis, alopecia and the facilitation of transdermal drug delivery.”
Another study revealed that microneedle therapy was more effective than IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments in stimulating collagen production in the skin’s outer layer. Results were achieved more quickly, with minimal risk. The study found that IPL treatments produced lower levels of collagen, required a longer healing time, with potential risks of burning, scarring and pigment problems. What is also quite beneficial is that microneedling is also more cost effective than its alternatives.
“With physician microneedling, people don’t have downtime. You have a day of tightness and a little pinkness when you go home, but by morning any visual drama is gone,” says Dr. DemkiwBartel.
After the recommended series of five physician treatments, patients can maintain those results with a home kit that she has developed. “My patients receive a thorough education session with the home kit, which includes a premium surgical steel roller, cleaning unit and serums.”
Dr. Demkiw-Bartel says the demand for her research-based skin care protocols is growing significantly. “People are responding to the message. The people I see aren’t interested in injectables and significant risk or downtime. They want to address their skin care differently and are looking for a scientifically proven alternative to injectables and lasers.”
The first step to achieving healthier skin is a complimentary consultation with Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. “After collecting the necessary information, I create a customized skin care plan that is based on the patient’s needs, desires, goals and budget. There’s no obligation to purchase a thing. You can go home and think about it, go on the website and read more about the products. When you’re ready to go ahead, we can proceed at the patient’s comfort level,” she says.
“My skin care protocols are physician directed, meaning I’m personally customizing each client’s plans and performing all the treatments and procedures. Being hands-on allows me to ensure that the patient is receiving optimum care and results,” says Dr. Demkiw-Bartel. “Seeing their results and responses is very gratifying.”
