Huskies earn 2 spots in soccer post-season

The University of Saskatchew­an clinched not one, but two spots, in the Canada West soccer post-season as both the men’s and women’s teams qualified after backto-back victories on the weekend.

Playing in front of a hometown crowd, the Huskies men’s team (66-2) defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars 4-1 and followed it up with a 2-0 shutout on Saturday against the University of Calgary Dinos.

Along with helping the Dogs to earn a place in the playoffs, the victory against the Dinos also secured Saskatchew­an a home playoff game. That game will take place on Friday against the University of Fraser Valley Cascades (7-6-2).

On the women’s side, Saskatchew­an recorded a pair of shutouts on the road, defeating the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-0 on Friday and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 1-0 on Saturday, to bring their regular-season record to 4-6-4.

The Huskies will head to Calgary on Friday to take on the University of Victoria Vikes (7-6-1) in a playin game. The winner of that matchup moves on to face the Dinos (13-1) in the Canada West quarter-finals

Saskatchew­an experience­d success on the ice as well, as both the men’s and women’s teams swept their respective series against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The men’s team (5-1) extended their winning streak to four games, posting backto-back shutouts against the visiting Pronghorns, winning 5-0 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday.

On the road in Lethbridge, the women’s team (3-1-2), also extended their winning streak to four games, claiming a 1-0 overtime win on Friday and a 2-1 win on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchew­an women’s volleyball team had a successful opening weekend as they defeated the host Brandon University Bobcats 3-2 and 3-0 on Friday and Saturday, respective­ly.

The men’s volleyball team opened their season with a pair of losses to the Bobcats, losing 3-1 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday.
