Hufsmith all-canadian at U Sports cross country

Courtney Hufsmith led the Huskies at the U Sports cross country national championsh­ips, finishing 11th in the nation and third in Canada West on Saturday in Kingston, Ont.

Hufsmith was named a U Sports second-team all-canadian for her efforts. Jared Welsh was the top Huskie on the men’s side, finishing 101st.

Meanwhile, the Huskie men’s hockey team swept a weekend set against the host UBC Thunderbir­ds, cruising to a 6-1 win on Friday, and getting by 3-2 on Saturday.

Levi Cable counted two goals for the Huskies on Friday while Parker Thomas had two goals on Saturday as the team improved to 9-1 on the season.

The Huskie women’s hockey team split their home ice set with UBC, taking Friday’s game 4-3 in double overtime before losing 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.

On Friday, Shyan Elias scored a late third period equalizer before Kayla Kirwan potted the overtime winner. The Huskies are 4-2-3-1 and in third place in Canada West.

In women’s basketball, the Dogs split their two games against the hometown Calgary Dinos.

On Friday the Huskies led from start to finish in a 67-58 victory. Summer Masikewich had 26 points for the winners.

On Saturday, the Huskies turned the ball over 31 times en route to an 83-53 shellackin­g. Masikewich again led the Huskies again with 15 points, while rookie Carly Ahlstrom had 14 points in 14 minutes of action. The Huskies are 4-2 on the season.

The Dinos swept their weekend men’s basketball set with the Huskies, winning 105-63 on Friday and 107-89 on Saturday. Maxwell Amoafo led the Huskies with 13 points on Friday. Lawrence Moore had 21 points Saturday for the Huskies, who fell to 3-3.

The Huskies men’s volleyball team defeated Calgary 3-0 on Friday at home but lost in five sets on Saturday. The Huskies are 3-3 on the season.

In women’s volleyball, the Huskies took the top-ranked Dinos to five sets before losing at home on Friday. On Saturday it was a three set sweep for Calgary as Saskatchew­an fell to 2-4.
