Saskatoon Blades enter the Christmas break with a 6-5 OT loss to Brandon

-

The Saskatoon Blades may have outscored their host in the first and third periods in Saturday night’s WHL action, but it was the Brandon Wheat Kings (15-10-3-3) who came out on top in the second and overtime periods to win 6-5.

Brandon’s Connor Gutenberg got the scoring started in the first period just past the midway point, but was followed by a goal apiece from Saskatoon’s Chase Wouters and Max Gerlach to give the Blades the 2-1 lead.

The second period belonged almost exclusively to the Wheat Kings as they outscored the Blades 4-1.

Cole Reinhardt and Ben Mccartney each scored one for Brandon, before Dawson Davidson added one for the Blades. However, Brandon’s Stelio Mattheos found the back of the net twice in the second period’s remaining time to put the Wheat Kings up 5-3 at the break.

In the third period, Saskatoon got goals from Gerlach and Tristen Robins, and were able to shut out Brandon, tying the game 5-5 and forcing overtime.

Just over two minutes into overtime, Brandon’s Mattheos netted his third goal of the game to earn the hat trick and the victory.

Saturday night’s tilt was Saskatoon’s last game before Christmas. They enter the break with a 21-10-4-0 record, good enough for second place in the East Division. They’ll return to action on Thursday, Dec. 27, when they host the division and league’s No. 1 team, the Prince Albert Raiders (31-2-0-1).
