Get into the beat this Boxing Day

Three concerts to get you moving and burning off that Christmas turkey

- MATT OLSON maolson@postmedia.com

The most important time of the year is right around the corner. That’s right, my friends — we are less than a week away from Boxing Day, so make sure you’ve got your eyes on some of the big deals that are coming your way. Boxing Day is also a pretty good time for concerts that aren’t all filled with Silent Nights and Little Drummer Boys, so don’t sleep on the music you can get out to during a sleepy holiday time of year. Best wishes to all, and to all a good night.

FOAM LAKE

When: Wednesday, Dec. 26 Where: Amigos Cantina

What: It’s not the three wise men — it’s four superbly talented brothers from right here in Saskatoon. It’s pretty fantastic that four brothers were able to create a complete band together — and it’s equally fantastic that they’re all good. The pop-rocking group definitely has something of an “electric” edge to their sound, but they’ve got the classic power guitar sound to go along with it. Their songs are really catchy, too — I’m a big fan of Last Chance — and they have good variety to what they produce. Some bands fall into the trap of sounding “samey,” but Foam Lake is powerful and unique all at once.

MO’ LOVE

When: Wednesday, Dec. 26 Where: Capitol Music Club What: This is the show that I am most looking forward to this month, and my fingers are crossed that I’m going to be able to get to it. Mo’ Love is not a Motown/soul/r&b tribute band — it’s the Motown/soul/r&b tribute band. If this is your style of music, you owe it to yourself to hear this group play. The 12-piece band brings together musicians from other bands throughout Saskatoon, and the end result is a magnificent display of musical might. Their Michael Jackson covers are particularly awesome, but there’s so much to like about this group. It’s cool, it’s hip, and it’ll probably be an awesome party of a concert.

ROY WOODS

When: Wednesday, Dec. 26 Where: Coors Event Centre What: It’s probably been mentioned in this column before, but I am not a connoisseur of rap and hip-hop. However, sometimes it’s pretty easy to recognize talent, pure and simple — and Roy Woods is not lacking for talent. He’s in his early 20s, which makes it even more impressive when you take note of how well he’s done for himself. The Brampton, Ont., native is an excellent rapper with a bit of a lighter and higher voice that makes his vocals really stand out (if the great lyrics didn’t do that already). It’s going to be a big, busy concert — but it’s worth checking out during your post-holiday fun.
