New Honda robot vehicle can do your dirty work

- COLEMAN MOLNAR

Honda is heading to CES 2019 with a new rolling gadget it hopes will change how people work outdoors.

The company has combined its newest autonomous technology with its tried-and-tested ATV to create the Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle, a prototype it says could become an invaluable tool to make back-breaking work easier across several industries.

A wheeled robot could find uses in wildfire fighting, construction, landscaping, snow removal and more hard, dirty jobs people don’t always feel like doing, or tend to hurt themselves doing, the automaker says.

The HAWV (we’re taking liberty with that acronym) was developed by Honda R & D Americas “to enhance efficiency and safety for public, commercial, and consumer enterprises.”

Sure, we could always use an extra hand with the yard work. Send in the robots!

Honda has plugged a GPS and autonomous driving tech into one of its four-wheel-drive ATVS and removed the places for humans to sit. Sensors help guide the unit across tricky terrain while a rail accessory mount system offers storage, attachment and even power plug-in options.

Honda reckons the Autonomous Work Vehicle has plenty of uses.

It could literally take the load off for forest firefighters and work doing agricultural labour. Driving.ca
