Yet another U.S. newspaper says Saskatoon worth visit
Last year, the New York Times recommended its readers pay a visit to Saskatoon. Now another of America’s best-read newspapers has done the same.
USA Today, which is distributed throughout the United States, abroad and online, ran a travel story last week that praised Saskatoon as a destination for tourists.
“Surrounded by shimmering wheat fields in southern Saskatchewan lies Canada’s fastest growing city: Saskatoon,” travel writer Lavanya Sunkara wrote.
“Known as the ‘Paris of the Prairies’ for its eight bridges that span the South Saskatchewan River, this small city is vibrant with natural, cultural, and culinary delights.”
As with the New York Times, which named Saskatoon among the top 52 places in the world to visit last year, the USA Today article recommends the city in part because of the Remai Modern art gallery.
The online version of the article carries the headline “Why you need to visit Saskatoon, the Paris of the Prairies” with the sub-headline “Canada’s best destination you’ve never heard of.”
Sunkara’s article praises Remai Modern, the Meewasin Valley trail system, the Western Development Museum, Wanuskewin Heritage Park and the city’s summer festivals.
Saskatoon’s new restaurants, breweries and bars are mentioned, as is a “welcoming prairie spirit.”
Sunkara is a New York-based freelance travel writer.
The gallery, which opened in October 2017 after much controversy and delays, has attracted more visitors than expected; an estimate for its first full year pegged the number at 450,000.
The exposure in USA Today follows a November article in Architectural Digest that placed Saskatoon atop the list of “Seven underrated travel destinations in Canada.”
That feature called the Remai Modern “gorgeous.”
Despite all the accolades for the city’s new art gallery, the man seen as the guiding force for its success, director Gregory Burke, announced last month he was leaving to lead the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand.
