A dog park used by thousands of people north of Saskatoon’s Hampton Village neighbourhood appears likely to remain open.

On Monday, city council’s planning, development and community services committee unanimously endorsed a recommendation to keep the off-leash dog park open.

The park had been slated for closure because of concerns about the access road flooding and difficulty enforcing the city’s animal control bylaw in the Rural Municipality of Corman Park, where the dog park is located.

The road has been fixed and the city is striking a deal with Corman Park to enforce its animal control bylaw in the two city dog parks in the RM, a City of Saskatoon report says.

A city report estimates nearly 20,000 people use the park every year.

It’s located just west of the John G. Diefenbaker International Airport.

“(People who use the park) would have been very upset if this had been recommended to be closed,” said Coun. Troy Davies, whose ward includes Hampton Village.

City council must still officially approve the decision.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the committee endorsed a revamp of the process for complaining about persistent noise from barking dogs in residential areas.

The city administration plans to fine-tune the process for complaining about daytime nuisance barking. The changes are expected to reduce the amount of time residents are required to fill out a log detailing the barking. Current rules require logs to be kept for five to seven days; the changes would reduce that period to two or three days.

Some questions, such as those attempting to determine why a dog is barking, are supposed to be eliminated. The changes are expected later this month and will be reviewed after a year.

The Saskatoon Animal Control Agency received 321 dog barking complaints in 2017 and handed out 47 tickets.
