Dach named captain at Top Prospects showcase

Saskatoon Blades Centre Kirby Dach has been named the captain for Team Orr at the Sherwin-williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Dach, and his teammates, will lineup against Team Cherry captain Dylan Cozens of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Cherry team, coached this year by Hockey Night in Canada announcer and Don Cherry sidekick Ron Maclean. Coaching for the Orr team will be former NHL goaltender Kelly Hrudey, at the showcase on Wednesday in Red Deer.

Dach, who turns 18 years old on Monday, hails from Fort Saskatchew­an, Alta., and was chosen by the Blades with the second overall pick in the 2016 WHL bantam draft. He leads the Blades in scoring and is in the top-20 in league scoring with 48 points in 41 games including 17 goals and 31 assists.

“It’s pretty special to be part of this game in the first place and to be able to wear a letter on my chest is an incredible honour,” Dach said in a news release.

HUSKIES TEAMS IN TOP-10 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS

Seven Huskies sports teams are ranked in the top-10 in the latest U SPORTS rankings released on Tuesday.

The top-ranked Huskies teams are the men’s hockey team, who have a 13-3 record and continue to maintain the No. 3 spot in Canada.

As well as the women’s track and field team, who moved up into third place, from a sixth-place previous ranking.

Three Huskies teams are ranked fifth in the country including women’s basketball (12-2 record), as well as both men’s and women’s wrestling teams.

The Huskies men’s track team also jumped into seventh place in the rankings, after not previously being ranked and the women’s hockey team have maintained their spot in 10th place.
