Hockey, hoops teams sweep opponents

Leah Bohlken netted the game winner two minutes and 39 seconds into the second overtime period as the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies women’s hockey team (96-5-2) defeated the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 1-0 on Friday. They followed up that with a 3-0 win on Saturday.

Huskies goaltender Jessica Vance recorded her sixth and seventh shutouts of the season with the wins, stopping 23 shots in Friday’s game and 19 shots on Saturday.

Meanwhile, on the road, the men’s hockey team (19-3-0) bumped their winning streak up to four games after defeating the Pronghorns 6-1 on Friday and pulling out a narrow 5-4 win on Saturday.

On the hardwood, the men’s basketball team picked up a pair of important wins in the hunt for a playoff spot, as they won 82-71 against the host Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday, and a come-from-behind 84-83 victory on Saturday. The wins improve the Huskies’ record to 9-7, leaving them tied with the Pronghorns for seventh in Canada West with four games remaining in the regular season.

Saskatchew­an’s women’s basketball team (14-2), which is the No. 1 team in Canada West and has secured a playoff spot, now has a 10game winning streak after sweeping the Cougars 90-44 on Friday and 108-65 on Saturday.

In volleyball action, both teams split their games against the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons. The women’s team (7-11) lost 3-0 on Friday, but flipped that score on Saturday to win 3-0, while the men’s team (8-8) won 3-0 on Friday, but lost 3-2 on Saturday.
