-

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s wrestling team are the best in the west following the Canada West Championships in Abbotsford on Saturday.

The Huskie women won seven medals and finished eight points ahead of the Alberta Pandas for their second title in the last three seasons. The Huskie men just missed out on a title of their own, finishing second, one point behind the Alberta Golden Bears. They medalled 10 times.

Huskie women’s gold medal winners were Alexandra Schell (48 kg), Maddison Haney (67 kg), Berit Johnson (72 kg) and Kiera Prior (82 kg). Men’s gold medals went to Logan Sloan (54 kg), Hunter Lee (90 kg) and Liam Graham (120 kg). Sloan was named the Canada West male rookie of the year.

The U SPORTS National Championships are up next from Feb. 22-23 in Calgary.

Morgan Willoughby’s first goal of the season stood as the game winner as the Huskies women’s hockey team won 2-1 over the visiting defending national champion Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday, rebounding from a 2-1 defeat to the Bisons on Friday.

The Huskies finish their Canada West regular season in fourth place at 10-10-5-2. Saskatchewan will host their first-ever playoff game at Merlis Belsher Place next weekend as they welcome either the Mount Royal Cougars or Regina Cougars.

The Huskie men’s and women’s volleyball teams, both battling for playoff position, each split their weekend set of games to TRU Wolfpack teams in Abbotsford, by identical scores. Both teams lost 3-1 on Friday before rebounding for 3-1 wins on Saturday.

The Huskie men are now 10-10 and tied for fifth-place in the conference. The women are 9-13 and will need to sweep their final two games and get some help, in order to qualify for the playoffs. Both teams will host the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday and Saturday to close out the regular season.
