SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION
First celebrated in Saskatchewan 32 years ago, Teacher/staff Appreciation Week (TSAW) is now observed across the country, led by the Canadian Home and School Federation.
Over the years, TSAW has increased in size and scope, to honour, not just teachers, but support staff including educational assistants, school librarians, janitors, bus drivers and administration staff.
In schools across the province, teachers and staff will be honoured at a variety of special events, led by school community councils. TSAW events include special assembly programs, breakfasts and lunches. “Food is by far the most common way that volunteers express their appreciation for teachers and staff,” says Joy Bastness, director with the Saskatchewan Association of School Councils.
To find out more about TSAW events at your school, contact your local School Community Council (SCC), through your neighbourhood school or parent group.
The Canadian Home and School Federation also suggests these ideas to say “thanks” to teachers and school staff in our community:
• A draw for prizes donated by parents and local businesses
• Engage students in showing appreciation
• Notes of appreciation in the teachers’/staff mail slots
• A bushel of apples for all to enjoy: good and good for them!
• Gift basket of school supplies
• Purchase something for the staff room (new coffee maker, supplies, etc.)
• A Wall of Appreciation: posters or a banner demonstrating appreciation
• H&S members share messages of appreciative announcements
• Host a ‘Teacher and Staff Appreciation Tea’
• Make up a quiz or word search puzzle for all teachers and staff and give out prizes
• Personalized mugs filled with goodies and messages of appreciation for all teachers and school staff
