VW Jetta GLI debuts with 228 hp, new suspension
VW unveiled its Jetta GLI at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show early February, featuring a hopped-up drivetrain and highly upgraded suspension borrowed from the Golf GTI.
The star of the show is the engine from the Golf GTI, which is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Even better is the fact power will be sent to the ground via a six-speed manual transmission.
A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is also available.
On top of (or rather, underneath) that excellent drivetrain combo is the addition of fully independent multi-link rear suspension, which, coupled with 18-inch wheels, will make it quite good to drive. The Golf R lends its brakes in the form of 13.4-inch vented front discs with red-painted calipers. An electronic limited-slip differential tops the whole thing off.
Exterior touches include a new black honeycomb grille with red stripe, a new front bumper with larger intakes, and a new rear spoiler that gives it an Audi-like appearance. The GLI also sits slightly lower (15 millimetres) than the regular model.
The 2019 VW Jetta GLI will be available in two trim levels and a 35th Anniversary Edition, which will have a bunch of blacked-out exterior parts and a special badge, as well as a fifth “Comfort” drive mode.
Expect the GLI to hit dealerships starting in the spring. Pricing is yet to be announced.
