Lundberg OT hero as Huskies advance

It took Rachel Lundberg until the end of the third overtime of her 30th game before she got her first goal of the season. But oh what a time for a score.

Ten seconds away from having to play a fourth overtime, Lundberg sent the exhausted Huskies home happy with a 2-1 win over the Mount Royal Cougars on Sunday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The win also gave the women Huskies a two-games-to-one series victory.

Bailee Bourassa’s early second period goal staked the Huskies to a 1-0 lead that held until Tatum Amy tied it with 2:59 to play in regulation. Tough-luck loser Zoe De Beauville stopped 58 of 60 shots she faced while counterpar­t Jessica Vance made 24 saves for the Huskies.

The Huskies won Game 1 on Friday 5-0 while the Cougars took Game 2, 3-0 on Saturday to set up the dramatics.

Saskatchew­an will face the topranked Alberta Pandas in Edmonton this weekend in a best-of-three Canada West semifinal series.

Both Huskies basketball teams are also headed to CW semifinals after 2-0 series sweeps at home.

The Huskies women handily defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 102-56 in Game 2 on Friday.

Sabine Dukate led the way with 21 points for the Huskies. The Huskies will host the Canada West semifinal this weekend.

In men’s action, a 97-77 victory over the Regina Cougars sends the Huskies into the semifinals in Calgary against the Dinos, starting on Thursday. Alexander Dewar led the Huskies with 19 points.

The Huskies men’s volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the visiting Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday.

The Huskies, who finished fifth in the Canada West standings with a 12-10 record, will face the Cougars in a quarter-final rematch this weekend.

The Huskies women’s volleyball team was on the wrong end of a sweep by the Mount Royal Cougars and will miss the playoffs with a 9-15 record.
