Huskie and Sask Sport award winners

Two members of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team have earned major Canada West awards. Head coach Dave Adolph, who guided the Huskies to a franchise record 25 regular-season wins, was named the coach of the year on Wednesday. Goaltender of the year honours went to second year player Taran Kozun.

For Adoph, it is the fourth time in his career he has been named CW Coach of the Year, previously winning in 1998, 2000 and 2017. In 2017 he was also named as the nation’s top university men’s hockey coach, winning the Father George Kehoe Memorial Award.

It was a year to remember for Kozun, who followed in the footsteps of former teammate Jordon Cooke, who won the past three consecutive CW Goalie of the Year awards before turning pro this season.

Kozun tied for the best save percentage in the conference at .926. and tied for the most shutouts with five. He also enters the CW record books as the first goaltender ever to win 20 games.

SASK SPORT JANUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

The Sask Sport Inc. January Athlete of the Month Award went to Jessica Frotten of Regina on Monday. Frotten set a Canadian record while winning the bronze medal in the T53 400-metre race at the Canberra International Track Meet. She won silver in the T53 200 m, bronze in the T53 5,000 m, sixth in the T53 800 m, and seventh in the T53 1500m. A few days later Frotten finished seventh at the Oz Day 10 km road race in the Open Division. The other nominees were Ryan Rousell, Asquith (fencing), Logan Pletz, Regina (biathlon) and Max Litzenberger, Saskatoon ( judo).
