Police track motorcyclist clocked at 260 km/h
A 20-year-old man from Swanson, Sask., is accused of reaching speeds of 260 kilometres an hour on a motorcycle while trying to evade police.
Warman RCMP received a complaint from a highway patrol officer around noon on Tuesday about a sport bike passing him at a speed of about 160 km/h on Highway 45 south of Delisle, RCMP said in a news release.
RCMP said the patrol officer tried to pull the driver over but the motorcyclist continued north on the highway.
A member of the Vanscoy Police Service later tried to pull over the motorcyclist, who instead sped east on Highway 7 at about 200 km/h.
The Saskatoon police air support unit was alerted to the pursuit, and the motorcyclist turned around to head in the opposite direction, toward Delisle, and near Swanson encountered the highway patrol officer who had attempted the first stop, RCMP said. The officer again unsuccessfully attempted to pull the driver over.
Air support officers then measured the motorcyclist reaching a speed of 260 km/h, RCMP said.
Just south of Swanson, air support officers “observed the bike pulling off the road onto a rural property where (the driver) attempted to hide the bike from police. The driver then fled on foot.”
RCMP, highway patrol and Vanscoy police found a man at an outbuilding on the property. RCMP arrested him without incident.
The man is charged with three counts of flight from a peace officer and one count of dangerous driving.
He is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon provincial court on May 8.
