Porsche tees up new features for 718
The 2020 718 Cayman and Boxster T models adopt the same approach as the 911 T that’s for sale in North American — namely a bunch of weight-saving materials and some options from the S models, but for a price only slightly higher than the bare-bones car.
Available for order now in Europe, the 718 T models are, as yet, unconfirmed for North America. Porsche said that doesn’t mean we won’t eventually get them, only that there are no immediate plans to bring them to our shores.
Standard kit on the 718 Cayman T includes 20-inch wheels, a PASM sport chassis lowered by 20 millimetres, a shortened gearshift and the Sport Chrono package.
A six-speed gearbox with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and a mechanical locking rear differential are standard. Porsche’s dual-clutch transmission (PDK) is an option. Dynamic gearbox mounts, which minimize vibrations in the engine and gearbox, are also part of the deal.
The engine is the same in all cars — a turbocharged 2.0-litre flat four with 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, enough to motivate the 1,350-kilogram Cayman T from zero to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds with the six-speed manual and 4.7 with the PDK.
The Cayman and Boxster T are mostly geared to those looking to extract more driving dynamics, more driving pleasure and more from the driving experience. In other words, more substance, less bling.
