Kick back and enjoy life in the slow lane

-

WHAT TO DO:

The Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park never closes and offers winter events, snowshoe and cross-country ski trails (the Resort at Cypress Hills rents gear if you don’t have your own). Find more info about events and park trails at cypresshills.com.

Snowfall can be unpredictable; sometimes your winter snowshoeing trip turns into a hike.

Visit maplecreek.ca for more autumn and winter activities in the area.

WHERE TO STAY

Ghostown Blues closes for the season at the end of September, but hosts concerts throughout the year — bring your dancing boots. Visit the website for details: ghostownblues.com.

Book a room for 2020 far in advance, as it’s a popular place. There are several accommodation options in town and the Resort at Cypress Hills is a beautiful spot to stay inside the park: resortatcypresshills.ca.

WHERE TO EAT:

Grab a pint and a plate of wings in the classic rockthemed lounge at the Rockin’ Horse Cookhouse & Bar or take the kids for homemade lasagna in the restaurant. Daily Grind has its own coffee roaster, plus breakfast and lunch, while The Shop is another great bet for homemade baking and light lunches.

If you’re waiting until summer 2020 to visit, Maple Creek is one heck of a culinary destination in August with the annual Taste of Maple Creek festival.

Visit the local farmers’ market Friday mornings in the town square. Check the town’s website for more events to help plan your visit: maplecreek.ca.

During the warmer months, grab lunch at the Lakeview Grill inside the Cypress Hills park. Chef Joel Fitzpatrick does an excellent job of creating from-scratch dishes in the canteen-style eatery with beautiful views of Loch Leven lake.
