WALTERS, Leonard Eric

1929 - 2019

-

With sadness, the family announces the death of Len Walters occurred on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Royal University Hospital. Len was predeceased by his wife Jean, and is survived by his children John (Drenda), Heather (Calvin) Tant, Grant (Lesley), as well as his grandchildren Jackson, Sydney, Kim (Karl), Connor, Emily, Jayne (Kevin), Kent, Sam, and Hudson.

Len was born in Saskatoon, and after attending Buena Vista, Nutana and Tech, he joined his father’s electrical contracting business. The growth and operation of Saskatoon General Electric became a lifelong endeavour. Throughout his time in business he was involved in many industry associations including Saskatoon and Saskatchewan Electrical Contractor Associations, as well as the Saskatoon Construction Association, of which he was made an honorary lifetime member.

In 1958, Len married the love of his life, Jean Christie, and started the adventure of making a home and raising a family. Given Jean’s propensity for the less common, and Len’s unwavering trust in her, they undertook journeys and experiences near and far. Jean wanted the family to get outdoors, so Len learned to ski at 40. He supported the local ski scene, enjoyed family runs on Blackstrap, Marmot Basin and even Zermat, and kept skiing into his 80s. From treks in the Himalayas, to the surf of Hawaii, and the trails of the west coast, Jean and Len’s travels were wide and varied. Another central joy was time spent at the Pike Lake family cabin, where Len and Jean canoed, sailed, ’mucked about’ and socialized with friends and family.

After the passing of his wife in 2004, Len was faced with new challenges.

Jean had been the artisan, the cook and the gardener of the house, and Len endeavoured to maintain what she had started. Instead of the potter’s wheel, Len had the lathe, where he spent countless hours honing his craft. His yard was beautiful and his raspberry jam was even better.

Len was truly blessed with a large cohort of life-long friends, close family and in his last 2 years, the supportive community of staff and residents at Preston Park II. He was a man of unparalleled integrity, honesty and kindness. Len will be missed and remembered with intense fondness by us all.

A Life Celebration Service will take place on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home followed by a reception at the Edwards Family Centre.
