Saskatoon has exciting weekend ahead for sports fans

Saskatoon’s weekend sports calendar is filled to the brim.

There is no shortage of viewing options over the next few days, in a variety of sports and venues, as one of Saskatoon’s busier weekends in recent memory takes shape. Highlights include:

■ Mustang Volley, the long-running Mount Royal volleyball tournament that commenced Thursday and runs through Saturday.

■ Football fans have plenty to watch, starting with the city high school 5A football final. That goes Friday, with Marion Graham playing Bishop Mahoney at SMF Field (7:30 p.m. start).

■ On Saturday, the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies host the Alberta Golden Bears in a 2 p.m. regular-season football finale at Griffiths Stadium. The 4-3 Huskies will place anywhere from first to fourth, depending on what happens Saturday. Then on Sunday, at 1 p.m., the national champion Saskatoon Hilltops will host the Edmonton Huskies for the Prairie Football Conference championsh­ip.

■ Things aren’t any less hectic in the hockey world. The Saskatoon Blades — off to a 7-6-0-1 start — host the Winnipeg Ice on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Moose Jaw Warriors Sunday at 2 p.m. Across town, the U of S Huskies will host Calgary in men’s hockey games at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.

■ Meanwhile, there’ll be an all-saskatoon matchup in the Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League, when the Contacts meet the Blazers Sunday at Merlis Belsher (1:45 p.m.). On the junior B side, the Saskatoon Royals will host the Southern Rebels Friday (7:45 p.m.) at Rod Hamm Arena.

■ University soccer playoffs touch down in Saskatoon this weekend. On Friday, Lethbridge and UBC will square off at Field 7 in Nutrien Park (1 p.m.) in a women’s soccer play-in game to see who meets the Huskies on Sunday in a 2 p.m. sudden-death quarter-final.

■ The Huskies men’s soccer team, meanwhile, will host the Victoria Vikes in a quarter-final match at Griffiths Stadium (7:30 p.m. start). The Huskies finished their conference season with a 7-3-4 record, and Victoria was 8-6-1.

■ In university volleyball, the Huskies will play their season openers Friday and Saturday at the PAC against UBC. On Friday, the women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m .; on saturday, it’ s the women at 3 p.m. and the men at 5 p.m.

■ And finally, for those keeping an eye on that big football team down south, the Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s play Saturday in Edmonton at 5 p.m.
