Shutout moves men’s hockey team to Final Four

Two unanswered goals by Tobias Hyrich-krueger punched the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies men’s team’s ticket to the Canada West Final Four for the first time since 2014. Rookie goalie Marcus Baxter picked up his fifth shutout in his past six games as the Huskies upended the University of Victoria Vikes 2-0 on Saturday at home in quarter-final action.

The Huskies women were looking for a similar result in their own home quarter-final game on Sunday but they lost 4-0 to the Alberta Pandas. The Huskies’ season comes to an end after they finished in second place in the Prairie Conference with an 8-2-4 record.

The Huskies men’s hockey team split a home series against the Calgary Dinos, winning 3-2 on Friday and losing 3-2 in double OT on Saturday. The Dogs are tied with Manitoba for fourth place in Canada West.

The women’s hockey team swept their series in Calgary, allowing just a single goal all weekend. The Huskies defeated the Dinos 3-1 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday. Jessica Vance stopped 32 shots on Friday while Camryn Drever stopped all 22 shots on Saturday. The Huskies are tied for second in Canada West and just one point out of first.

In volleyball action, the Huskies women defeated the defending champion UBC Thunderbir­ds in four sets (25-18, 25-21, 26-28, 25-17) on Saturday to split a weekend series. UBC, who are ranked third in Canada, took the Friday match 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 2516). In men’s volleyball the Huskies swept the Thunderbir­ds out of the PAC with 3-1 wins on Friday (18-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-23) and Saturday (17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 30-28). Both Huskies teams have 3-1 records.

And Courtney Hufsmith led the Huskies women’s cross-country team to a bronze-medal team finish at the Canada West Championsh­ips in Calgary. The third-year runner missed out on individual gold by two-tenths of a second, settling for silver in the 8K event.
