Trick or treat! Not that we ever need an excuse for a sweet treat, but Halloween is definitely one of them. Celebrate this year with some of our favourite festive recipes.

Caramel-covered apples have long been a Halloween tradition. Caramel candies make it easy to create a creamy, foolproof topping. Enjoy the treats plain or roll them in chopped nuts, candy sprinkles or shredded coconut for an extra-special treat.

’Tis the season of pumpkin spice everything and our scones are no exception. Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg add some autumn flair to a classic recipe.

Our nut-free chocolate chip bars get a hit of colour from rainbow candies and are perfect for a Halloween party or a lunch box dessert. The chewy blondie base is dotted with chocolate, making it a surefire hit with kids.

CARAMEL APPLES

■ 50 caramels

■ 2 tbsp (30 ml) water

■ 4-5 medium apples

■ Wooden sticks

■ Chopped nuts, optional

1. Melt caramels with water in a heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until smooth.

2. Remove stems from apples. Insert a stick into each apple.

3. Dip apples one at a time into caramel mixture, turning until coated. Scrape excess caramel from bottom of apples. Roll coated apples in chopped nuts. Place on a greased parchment paper-lined tray. Chill in refrigerator.

4. Wrap apples in plastic wrap and keep refrigerated until 15 minutes prior to serving. Note: For easy removal of cellophane wrappers from the caramels, place in freezer until wrappers are brittle and caramels are firm.
