Saturday twin bills dominate CFL sked

-

The Canadian Football League has all but abandoned its Saturday triple-headers in favour of back-toback games.

The 81-game 2020 regular-season schedule, which was released Monday, is still weighted toward Saturday action with 36 games in total and 14 doubleheaders.

The only Saturday triple-header is set for Sept. 12 in Week 14 of 21.

There are also 28 Friday night games slated, including eight doubleheaders.

The regular season opens with B.C. at Edmonton on June 11, the first of 13 Thursday night tilts. The last of those on Sept. 3 sees B.C. head coach Rick Campbell take his Lions back to his old stomping grounds in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, the defending Grey Cup champions from Winnipeg host Calgary in their home opener on June 26.

There are just three Monday games scheduled for next season, and only one game will take place on a Sunday, when Winnipeg visits Saskatchewan on Sept. 6.

Other games of note include: ■ A Grey Cup rematch in Week 1 has the Blue Bombers travelling to Hamilton to meet the Ticats on Saturday, June 13.

■ A neutral site game between the Argos and the Riders on July 25 at an as yet unannounced location.

■ The Banjo Bowl between the Blue Bombers and Riders in Winnipeg on Sept. 12.

■ A Thanksgiving Day game between the Argos and Als in Montreal on Oct. 12.

The 108th Grey Cup will be played on Sunday, Nov. 22 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

The first pre-season game is set for May 24 when Edmonton travels to Winnipeg.
