Saskatoon Blades pick up pair of victories

-

In their two Western Hockey League games on the weekend, the Saskatoon Blades outscored their opponents 14-4.

On Friday, the Blades scored twice in the first, second and third periods to defeat the host Regina Pats 6-3.

Early in the second period, Saskatoon led 3-1, but back-toback goals within 16 seconds of each other allowed Regina to tie the game just before the period’s midway point.

Despite their comeback attempt, the Pats weren’t able to ever get ahead of the Blades as Saskatoon’s Riley Mckay gave his team back the lead with 2:18 left in the second period.

Alex Morozoff and Aidan De La Gorgendiere secured the victory for the Blades by adding one goal each in the third.

Saturday’s game started in favour of the Swift Current Broncos, but it didn’t end the same way.

Swift Current scored the game’s opening goal 36 seconds into the first period, but it was the only time they found the back of the net as Saskatoon went on to score eight goals to win 8-1.

Chase Wouters and Martin Fasko-rudas each had two goals in that game, while Morozoff, Zach Huber, Tristen Robins and Caiden Daley each had one.

With 11 games remaining in their regular season, the victories leave the Blades with a record of 30-22-2-3 and 65 points, two points behind the Brandon Wheat Kings in the East Division playoff race.

RUSH EARN ROAD WIN OVER PHILADELPHIA

Hat tricks by three of their players helped the Saskatchewan Rush defeat the host Philadelphia Wings 15-10 on Saturday night in National Lacrosse League action.

The two teams battled back and forth for the lead in the opening period of the game, but with one minute and nine seconds left to play in the first period, Mark Matthews scored his lone goal of the game to give Saskatchewan a 4-3 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish again.

Ryan Keenan, Jeff Shattler and Ben Mcintosh combined for nine of the Rush’s 15 goals, each picking up a hat trick. Matthews led the team in the assist column with eight, while Robert Church and Mcintosh recorded three apiece.

With the victory over Philadelphia, the Rush maintain their perfect road record and improve their overall record to 6-2.
