Anderson, Korte repeat as senior provincial curling champions

-

Competing at her home Saskatoon Nutana rink this weekend, Sherry Anderson marched undefeated to her fifth straight Saskatchewan senior women’s curling championship, winning the final 5-2.

A 7-0 finish in the round robin gave Anderson and her team, consisting of lead Anita Silvernagle, second Brenda Goertzen and third Patricia Hersikorn, a bye to the final where she met fellow Saskatoon Nutana rink Tracy Streifel.

Anderson got out to a 3-1 lead after six ends, but Streifel added another single in the seventh to close the gap.

However, Anderson secured the victory and the provincial title by picking up a deuce in the eighth and final end.

On the men’s side, Bruce Korte, who also calls Nutana his home rink, won his second consecutive provincial championship, defeating Brian Humble of Saskatoon Sutherland 8-2.

Korte got off to a strong start, earning four points in the second end and stealing singles in the next two ends to take a commanding six-point lead that Humble was unable to overcome, although he did score two in the fifth.

Humble conceded after Korte picked up two more in the sixth end.

Korte’s team of lead Rory Golanowski, second Kory Kohuch and third Darrell Mckee went 5-2 in the round robin and finished first in the standings to earn a bye to the final.

Both Anderson and Korte were the Canadian senior champions last year and as such will be representing Canada at the world championships this April in Kelowna, B.C.
