Plan your trip now to Historic Reesor Ranch

- JENN SHARP

The Historic Reesor Ranch is a gem in Saskatchewan’s deep southwest.

It’s the province’s first provincially designated heritage ranch for good reason. It’s been in the Reesor family since 1904 and is a wonderful place to explore ranch life in the Cypress Hills.

Scott and Theresa Reesor offer various guided tours — on ATV and horseback — and carry on the family tradition of cattle ranching.

A highlight for many is the hearty breakfast buffet or barbecue supper at the Ranch Hall Grill and Bar. The Reesors added the restaurant to the ranch about five years ago when it became apparent their overnight guests craved home-cooked meals to complete the ranch experience.

Theresa does all the cooking from scratch, while Scott’s in charge of the evening barbecue.

A ranch-style breakfast buffet, geared to fill ya up for a day in the saddle, begins at 9 a.m. every day.

“It’s not fancy, but it’s certainly filling,” Theresa says. “And there’s enough there for everybody from vegetarians to people who love their meat.”

Lunches are served picnic style: healthy, portable and even with a wine or a beer if you fancy it.

Dinner is at 6 p.m. — just don’t call it dinner.

“Some people like to call it dinner, but we stick with supper. It’s more ranchy,” Scott says with a chuckle. (In fact, if you call the evening meal dinner in many parts of rural Saskatchewan, you’ll get a strange look.)

Scott’s barbecued sirloin steak is your best bet for dinner. Deerview Meats, a butcher shop just across the Alberta border, supplies the steaks wrapped in house-cured bacon.

The couple prefers supper guests to call ahead, but walk-ins are always welcome, too. Grab a beer or a glass of Cypress Hills wine and a snack if you arrive a bit early. Then just settle in and wait for Scott’s cowboy poetry reading to begin while the smell of freshly grilled steaks wafts on the breeze. The season begins May 1. Inquire about a new overnight Cowboy Campout package for summer 2020, a horseback adventure where wranglers will take guests to a campsite on the ranch lands to experience, among other things, the great outdoors and a delicious meal prepared over the campfire.
