Shaw, Kenke named Sask Sport athletes of year
The COVID-19 pandemic erased Sask Sport’s awards gala, planned for Thursday night in Saskatoon, but they unveiled their 2019 award winners in a press release the same day.
Saskatchewan Sport Awards winners include para cyclist Keely Shaw and kayaker Jarret Kenke, who earn female and male athleteof-the-year honours respectively. Both athletes hail from Saskatoon.
Shaw’s accomplishments include a silver medal in individual pursuit at the Para Cycling World Track Championships; Kenke was a silver medallist in K2 1,000m at the Pan-am Games, and at Canadian sprint nationals.
The youth female athlete of the year is Borden track athlete Savannah Sutherland, who won three silver and a bronze at Canadian championships, while Saskatoon diver
Rylan Wiens is the youth male athlete of the year after capturing gold at both junior and senior nationals.
Saskatchewan’s under-19 men’s water polo squad, which won three major events, is the team of the year. The U of S Huskies’ track coach, Jason Reindl of Saskatoon, is the coach of the year, and Regina canoeists Mike Vincent and Ivan English, who placed first at the Yukon River Quest, are the masters athletes of the year.
Others honoured are: Russell Martin of Grand Coulee (softball; coach dedication), Sherry Pasloski of Yorkton (Special Olympics; coach dedication), Dennis Rennie of Saskatoon (tennis; official award), the late Deanna Rindal of Prince Albert (curling, official award), Margaret Auringer of Maidstone (figure skating; volunteer recognition award), and Ken Trofimuk of Prince Albert (weightlifting; volunteer recognition award).
