Taran Kozun and Michelle Harrison, who enjoyed standout seasons on ice and track, are finalists for Canada West Athlete of the year.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies athletes are among six people from across the conference vying for men’s and women’s honours.

Kozun, a goalie with the Huskies men’s hockey team, was earlier named Canada West player of the year and goalie of the year, and was also chosen as U Sports player of the year.

He put up a 1.87 goalsagainst average this past season along with five shutouts and 17 wins.

His fellow men’s nominees are Calgary basketball player Brett Layton and Trinity Western volleyball player Eric Loeppky.

Harrison is up for female athlete of the year after setting a national record in the 60m hurdles at the U Sports championship.

She collected five medals between the Canada West and national championships.

She’s up against Trinity Western soccer player Jenaya Robertson and Manitoba swimmer Kelsey Wog.

The winners will be announced Thursday morning.

BRONCOS GOLF TOURNAMENT ON HOLD UNTIL 2021

The upcoming 2020 golf season — set to open May 15 in Saskatchewan — will not include the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament.

While golf courses across the province are slated to open soon, physical-distancing protocols still remain in place that prevent large gatherings during the COVID -19 global pandemic.

The memorial golf tournament organizing committee has made the “difficult decision” to postpone the third annual tournament until August 6-7 of 2021, according to a news release on Monday.

The decision was made due to “continued public health concerns as well as international travel and government restrictions due to the COVID -19 global pandemic,” the statement read.

The tournament is hosted by Humboldt natives Jared Bednar, head coach of the NHL’S Colorado Avalanche, and Brian Munz, radio voice of the Winnipeg Jets.

“This has been a difficult decision to come to over the last number of weeks,” said Munz. “In saying that, we believe our primary responsibility is the safety of the community, Bronco families, sponsors, volunteers and guests.”

The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in August, along with the 2020 SJHL Hall of Fame induction and Hunters Brothers concert.
