People urged to stay close to home this summer

Tourism Saskatchewan urges vacationers to support local businesses

- NYKOLE KING

Tourism Saskatchewan is encouraging people to consider local attractions and destinations this summer in an effort to support Saskatchewan businesses.

The tourism industry has been hit hard, said Jonathan Potts, executive director of marketing and communications at Tourism Saskatchewan. With restrictions and recommendations against travel outside the province, the organization is focusing on highlighting local spots, Potts said.

“The goal is very much to get people travelling in a relatively close radius to their home. It could be a few hours and spending their time and money here in Saskatchewan and learning about things they take for granted or haven’t done in a long time.”

Encouraging residents to travel responsibly and “stay open to changes that need to happen in order for businesses to stay open” under provincial public health guidelines, Potts admitted it’s a bit of “patchwork” to determine which businesses are open. He recommends people view the Tourism Saskatchewan website or call ahead.

While festivals and events such as Country Thunder, the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival and the Exhibition won’t be an option, here are five alternatives:

CANOE ON THE RIVER

To see the city from a new perspective, paddling a canoe through the heart of Saskatoon is an outdoor adventure that even beginners can try. Canoeski Discovery Company, a local eco-adventure company, rents canoes and leads canoe tours on the South Saskatchewan River.

BREWERY TASTINGS

Among the many microbreweries in Saskatoon, Crossmount Cider Company is one with a scenic view. Located just south of the city, it allows visitors to relax on the patio as they sample the ciders on tap with a view of the orchard and pond. The café is also preparing to reopen its food service in July.

HIKE AT CRANBERRY FLATS

The Cranberry Flats Conservation Area is a protected nature reserve outside the city that features natural plants and a view of the South Saskatchewan River. Visitors can take it all in as they

wander down the pathways.

VISIT THE BERRY BARN

A 10-minute drive south of the city on Valley Road, the Berry Barn offers a view of the South Saskatchewan River to visitors dining at the homestyle restaurant or wandering the grounds. Customers can also browse the gift shop and greenhouse.

FARMERS’ MARKETS

A variety of locally grown produce, baking and artisan creations are available at the farmers’ markets in Saskatoon. The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market is open on weekends at its Koyl Avenue location near the airport. Another option is the outdoor Street Stall market on Saturdays at River Landing.

?? MATT SMITH ?? Paddling on the South Saskatchewan River is an outdoor adventure that even beginners can try. Saskatchewan Tourism is encouraging people to spend their time and money locally this summer “learning about things they take for granted or haven’t done in a long time.”
