-

A Saskatoon police officer with the city’s bike unit suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by a man who became aggressive after a traffic stop.

Saskatoon police say that around 8 p.m. on Aug. 11 a member of the traffic unit saw a vehicle driving more than 70km/h above the posted speed limit near Broadway Avenue and Ninth Street East. The officer stopped the vehicle, issued a ticket and seized the vehicle. A sergeant with the bike unit assisted.

“As members cleared from the area, the bike sergeant was also attempting to leave as the man continued to scream at him ... the man ran over and struck the officer, resulting in the member falling off his bicycle. The officer was able to quickly get up to protect himself and was able to take the man into custody,” police said in a news release. The 29-year-old driver was charged with assaulting a police officer.
