Declarer put up the ace of diamonds and overtook the nine of hearts to draw trump. The ace of clubs was driven out in two rounds but West returned a diamond for partner's king, N-S +650.

South's leap to the major suit game was reasonable since he owned a solid six-card suit where a jump to three hearts would be non-forcing.

West had no reason to lead a spade since partner had overcalled one diamond but this beginning would have restricted declarer to the contract when declarer ducks but East wins to continue the suit. This defense would give E-W a much improved matchpoint award.

Several pairs might have landed in 3NT declared by North as a final destination where the opening lead would be the determining factor in the outcome.

If East starts with a diamond, North will win dummy's queen and drive out the ace of clubs for an impressive twelve tricks and the best possible result. However, East might also choose the king of spades as an opening shot. West will encourage, North will duck but the deuce of spades will be continued for West's jack.

If declarer plays low again, a diamond shift would earn the defense four tricks and, undoubtedly, saddle N-S with a matchpoint zero. Author: Dave Willis - visit his website at www.insidebridge.ca
