Friends and family are in mourning and the Saskatoon police investigation is continuing after a 16-year-old boy died in a single-vehicle collision on the city's east side.

According to city police, officers were called to the scene of a crash in the 4200 block of Taylor Street East on Sunday at around 6 a.m. After an initial investigation by the collision analyst unit, police said a 2008 Honda Civic “had been travelling east on Taylor Street at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control.”

According to police, the vehicle struck a pole and flipped over.

A 16-year-old was declared dead at the scene.

Two other occupants — both 15-year-old boys — were transported to hospital. Police said one suffered minor injuries while the other was believed to be in serious condition.

During the investigation, traffic restrictions were in place for much of Sunday until they were lifted by late afternoon. The area on Taylor Street around the scene of the collision features long straightaways and few traffic lights.

Coun. Sarina Gersher, who represents Ward 8, where the crash happened, declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation. She expressed condolences to friends and family of the people involved.

The 16-year-old who died in the collision attended Evan Hardy Collegiate. Administration at the high school, as well as Saskatoon Public Schools, declined to comment on Monday.

Many of the people on social media sharing their condolences are members of the local Muslim community, as was the 16-year-old boy.

Others on social media were quick to share stories about their own younger days and how they were fortunate to have escaped harm in a variety of situations.

Wrote one poster: “Absolutely heart breaking ... So many of us got lucky and had no repercussions. My whole heart goes out to the family and friends ...”
