The AMG GT is a stunning coupe, the best-looking car Benz has built in decades. It’s a twin-turbo V8-powered threat to the heart of the sports car establishment. We’d have been hard pressed to find room for improvement.
And then they took the roof off. Gone are the days when you would have to compromise for a convertible. There is no cowl-shake here, the dashboard doesn’t move with the tides. The chassis won’t twist over bumps or rattle itself to pieces through potholes. With the AMG GT there is simply no reason not to get the retractable version. Not even the sound of air violently thrown aside at 100 km/h can drown out the deep thunder of the Roadster’s engine. If you find yourself on the Autobahn, it will hit 316 km/h. You’d be wise to pack a set of goggles in the glovebox, just in case.
In fact, this is a car you want to be outside in. The raw acceleration, the cornering forces the tires can generate, the basso profundo of that V8 — every sensation is exaggerated without a roof in the way to muffle it.
It’s going to be a good summer.
