Gaiters Test for CFL Scouts at U Sports East-west Combine

Five Bishop’s University football players from the Class of 2018 were named to the Team East all-star team ahead of their CFL Draft years next spring.

The East-west Bowl collects the top U Sports football players following their third year of eligibilit­y in preparatio­n for the CFL Draft.

Part of the process leading into the all-star game, this Saturday, is the scouting combine which takes place at the beginning of the week before the players start practicing. The drills measure a prospects size, speed, strength providing benchmarks for comparison to the CFL’S scouting staffs for the players.

Mathieu Breton, 6’7” and 263 lbs, shined amongst the defensive lineman running the second fastest 40-yard dash, 5.03 seconds, in his positional group. Breton also put up a solid showing on the bench press, pushing 225 lbs for 17 reps.

Receivers Deshaun Smellie and Michael Nelson ran near identical times in the 40-yard dash with Nelson posting a 4.72 and Smellie a 4.79 respective­ly. The fastest time was a 4.58 run by Tyrone Pierre from the Laval Rouge et Or.

Offensive Lineman Mattew Ouellette Decarlo measured out well for his position, 6’4” and 314 lbs, as well as running the 40-yard dash in 5.65 seconds with a 10-yard split of 2.03 seconds. In terms of strength De Carlo pushed out 16 reps on the Bench Press.

Bishop’s late addition to Team East, kicker Vincent Dubé, did not participat­e in the bench press or 40-yard dash portion of the combine; posting a 23-inch vertical jump and a 7’7” broad jump.
