Sherbrooke cyclists mourn
More than 200 cyclists turned out on Wednesday evening to participate in the Sherbrooke leg of the “Ride of Silence” an international event focused on commemorating cyclists injured or killed in road accidents and promoting safety awareness. Now in its 15th year, the ride unites thousands of riders around the world every year for a silent, slow-paced ride through their home communities.
Cyclists in Sherbrooke gathered at the IGA Extra on King West before setting out just after 6pm and riding, with police escort, through the heart of the city to the cyclists’ memorial at St-francois park. The group was led by Richard Fortier, President of the Sherbrooke cycling club, and City councillor Bruno Vachon, who was this year’s honourary chairperson. To reinforce their message, the cyclists were also escorted by a hearse that was provided by the The Steve L. Elkas Funeral Home.
According to event organizers, 23 cyclists were involved in road accidents in Sherbrooke in 2016. The municipalities of Bromont, Granby, Lac Megantic, and Magog also participated in the international event this year.
