Flowers serving two functions in Richmond

- By Claudia Villemaire

Avast array of hanging flowerpots and bedding plants has at least brightened up the middle of town here at the municipal park on Main Street in Richmond, the result of the efforts of several volunteers, members, and friends of the St. Bibiane Parish. The century-old beacon on the highest point of the main street with its silver steeple, is often portrayed on tourism bulletins and postcards.

The struggle to keep ahead of maintenance cost of many churches in the area has inspired elders and managers to great efforts and organize multiple events, all aimed at raising funds to ensure these historic buildings, many

well over 100 years old, will be cared for and maintained.

Jeannette Comeau was busy with her watering sprinkler when we visited the central park where mounds of potted and single plants brightened a cloudy morning. “Business has been very good,” Comeau commented. “I think people realize these flowers are a bit more expensive, but we are raising money for the church upkeep, and so far we are quite encouraged by the public’s response.” Comeau and Delores Mayette, both on the managing board, expressed their thanks to the volunteers who have helped out during the twoweek sale, “especially morning and night when we are carrying out the displays or putting them under cover for the night,” Comeau added. “And may thanks to the public too.”
