Tree distribution in Potton
On Saturday, May 20 the Municipality of Potton held a tree distribution activity for those interested. The Ministry of Forests, Parks and Wildlife in collaboration with the Southern Quebec Forestry Association gave the Municipality 200 trees to handout (50 Sugar Maple, 50 Red Oak, 50 Black Cherry and 50 Red Maple). In attendance to welcome those eager to get trees and learn about the planting process, was Potton Mayor, Louis Veillon as well as Municipal staff.
The Municipality decided to use the activity as a way of dispersing information and three themes were chosen: The tree, its parts and its growth, roles and functions of the forest and invasive species. Each of the three topics was presented separately allowing individuals to choose the topic of interest to them. At the end of each of the kiosks, a mini quiz was given in order for the attendee to obtain a tree of choice.
“The dispersal of information activity proved to be quite a successful one,” shared a member of the Municipal Environment Team. “We really appreciated the help that day of two great volunteers, Henry Orban and Francine Hemmings.”
Local planting guru, Eric Deschenes also volunteered his time giving people tips and tricks on how to plant and where best to plant the trees in order to allow the opportunity for good growth.
The Municipality of Potton views activities like the tree distribution as a vital part of educating and encouraging the public to partake in the wellbeing of the environment and their surroundings. Those who attended the activity felt that it had been informative and many were happy to be leaving with beautiful trees to plant.
