Sentence imposed in Skinner and Nadeau heist
Yves Caron will serve two years behind bars for his involvement in the major jewelry heist at the Skinner & Nadeau store in the Promenades King in Sherbrooke last March.
A few days after the theft, Caron landed at the home of an acquaintance, Michel Hanszer, with some $53,000 worth of jewelry stolen from the long-established Sherbrooke business. He was not aware at the time that his contact with Hanszer would lead to his downfall.
Caron, who was on parole at the time, was at Hanszer's when the Montreal Police tactical intervention unit arrived at the Rolland Blvd residence in Montreal North.
Hanszer was quickly connected to possession of stolen goods, but Caron was released.
Two days after Hanszer pleaded guilty, Caron was arrested. Hanszer will be sentenced for his crimes in October.
Hanszer testified at the Sherbrooke Courthouse on Thursday against Caron during the preliminary investigation that was eventually aborted when Caron chose to settle his case. Caron pleaded guilty to possession of stolen goods worth more than $5,000.
Attorneys in the case submitted a joint recommendation that took into account Caron's rapid plea, his criminal record, the evidence available, and a promise by the prosecution not to file further charges in the case.
Caron must finish serving his 42 month-sentence from a break and enter case before beginning his latest sentence.
No charges have yet been laid against thieves who entered the Skinner & Nadeau store and Sherbrooke Police investigators are awaiting analysis. Suspects in the case are seen on images from surveillance cameras made public after the events, The suspects fled in a silver 2017 Hyundai The jewelry that found by police at Hanszer’s was returned to its rightful owner following a court order.
