Sherbrooke’s first Walk to Fight Arthritis hailed as a success

-

One hundred people turned out to Sherbrooke's very first Walk to Fight Arthritis on Saturday. Held on the campus of the University of Sherbrooke, the local walk was one of 41 different communities across Canada that took part in the 8th annual Walk to Fight Arthritis. Over 8,000 people participated altogether, raising $1.25 million for the Arthritis Society in an effort to show support for the 4.6 million people who are living with the chronic pain, inflammation and mobility restrictions of Arthritis. In Sherbrooke, the 100 participants collected $12,000.

Diane De Bonville of the Arthritis Society said that the turnout for Sherbrooke's first walk was very positive. “We’re very happy with the result,“De Bonville said. This year’s fundraising for the Arthritis Society’s primary fundraiser raised the eight-year total to over $10 million. The funds will be used to support much-needed research, programs and services.

“Freedom of movement is something we all deserve, which is why so many Canadians have come forward to show their support for the Walk to Fight Arthritis,” said Janet Yale, president and CEO of The Arthritis Society. “The success of the Walk to Fight Arthritis speaks to the incredible spirit and resilience of the Arthritis community. We’re so grateful for their support, and we’re committed to working on their behalf to create a future without Arthritis.”

“As for me, this first experience was very fulfilling and filled with emotions. Seeing participants come together was very rewarding! “added Marianne Camirand, Development coordinator. “The Hand in Hand program aims to help people touched by arthritis overcome isolation, and the Walk was the first gathering in Sherbrooke. People from different cities were present in support of their loved ones, from Montreal to Saguenay-lac-st-jean and even Kingsley Falls. This first edition was a success indeed! We exceeded our fundraising goal and are looking forward to seeing you in 2018! “
