Health education sessions take summer break

-

After another successful season, Townshippers’ Association is wrapping up the Community Health Education program (CHEP) for the summer. Held in partnership with the Community Health and Social Services Network (CHSSN), the program connects members of Quebec’s English-speaking communities with timely information, in English, on health topics from health professionals.

Everyone is welcome to the last health education session of spring that will provide information on Parkinson’s Disease on June 7 from 10-12 p.m. at Waterloo Elementary School, (5 Clark Hill).

Designed for people with Parkinson’s, caregivers, volunteers and family members, this videoconference will help increase awareness and understanding on issues such as communicating with health care workers, asking the right questions, and managing symptoms. In addition to presenter Danielle Blain, Regional Director of Parkinson Canada in Quebec, guest speakers from the Parkinson Peer Support and Caregivers Group in Lac Brome will also share their experience initiating and belonging to a local support group.

The CHEP program will return September 20, 2017, with a session on Osteoporosis with Myra Siminovitch.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Exploitation, neglect, and violence…elder abuse can take many forms. But if we all work together, we can conquer elder abuse and create a safer and friendlier environment.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 provides an opportunity for communities and individuals to increase awareness and support a response to end the abuse and suffering that older adults experience.

This June 15 at 4 p.m., join Townshippers’ at the Espace Cultural (90 rue Stdavid. Magog), for a conference held in English by Yvon Riendeau, a social gerontologist on aging well without intimidation or mistreatment of seniors. At 3 p.m., community organizations, town representatives, as well as political representatives will be invited to sign a charter protecting and preserving the rights of seniors.

The public is invited to this free event, which is brought to you by the Table de concertation des ainés Memphrémagog. Light refreshment will be served. Wear something purple in recognition of the day and to support the cause.

Don’t miss these healthy activities!

Find your motivation to move, savour a pedal-powered smoothie and enjoy a delicious lunch for free at the last Health Link session of the season on Wednesday, June 7 at the Armoury Community Centre, 563 Main Street, Bury.

Lunch will be offered starting at 11:30 a.m., then at 1 p.m. kinesiologist Lucie Laflamme will talk about how to exercise safely and find your motivation. As a special treat, Grade 3 students from Pope Memorial Elementary School will make smoothies using the MRC du Hautsaint-françois’s “Smoothie Bike”!

Registration is not required for lunch but would be appreciated so that we have enough food for everyone. To confirm your place for lunch, please call Kim Fessenden at 819-872-3771, ext. 2.

Health Link is a CHSSN initiative and a collaboration between the Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre, the CIUSSS de l’estrie – CHUS’S Haut-saintfrançois RLS, the Centre d’action Bénévole du Haut-saint-françois, and Townshippers’.

On Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the English-speaking communities of Brome-missisquoi, Haute-yamaska and their surrounding areas will have the chance to connect with health information and local resources at the Health & Wellness Fair.

Held at the Centre Lac-brome (270 Victoria, Knowlton), this free event will feature three presentations by health professionals and kiosks with information in French and English on local services and resources. Free childcare will be offered and light lunches can be purchased on site.
