Fordyce Branch Women’s Institute

-

On May 3, the members of the Fordyce Branch W.I. gathered in Emmanuel United Church for their regular monthly meeting.

President Norma Sherrer welcomed everyone and recited the poem “Friendship”: Two old ladies sit down to tea. I’m eighty-four and she’s eighty-three. I hate her and she hates me. But we’re the only ones left you see. We meet every Wednesday at half past three. I go to her then she comes to me. I bore her and she bores me. But we’re the only ones left you see. She talks of her Harry and I talk of Fred. And all the things they did and said. We both tell lies and never agree. But we’re the only ones left you see. She boasts of the party at Number 3. When Fred kissed her instead of me. But I still wear his ring so it’s plain to see. Why I hate her and she hates me. Never trust your best friend, they say. And I don’t trust her not to this day. But they’re all gone so pour some more tea. For we’re the only left you see. (Pat Antell)

The Mary Stewart Collect and Salute to the Flag were repeated by all and “O Canada” sung. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Marilyn Mahannah (8th). Marilyn has not been well enough to come to the meetings since her fall. We hope that she will be able to join us soon.

Secretary Elizabeth Milroy read the Minutes of the April Meeting, which were accepted as read. And Treasurer June Lamey gave her Financial Report along with her joke “A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his younger cousin asked him “How many women can a man marry?” “Sixteen” the boy replied “How do you know that?” the cousin said. The little boy said “Easy, all you have to do is add it up, like the preacher said “Four better, four worse, four richer and four poorer.”

The bus to Convention was mentioned and “Women walk the World was a success in Cowansville as many members came out to walk around the parking area at the mall Under New Business - The delegates were chosen for Convention and a show of hands as to who was entering handicrafts there.

The meeting was then turned over to Edwina Bougie “Health and Community Living” Chairperson. Edwinda then presented a great deal of information, which she is, receiving from attending a workshop for seniors. Advice for your home-no door sills, f lashlight, lamp, telephone, ‘glow in the dark’ clock on the night stand, no rugs etc., wear proper shoes with flat bottoms, grab bars, especially in the bathroom and various articles to buy to make life easier. President Norma thanked her for all the information we received as well as the papers, which she handed out.

The members were reminded of the Tea on May 23rd, when the Guides will entertain their “Pen Pals” for the last few months. It will be fun to finally get to know to whom one has been writing.

There being no further business “Coins for Friendship” were collected, ‘Grace’ said and refreshments enjoyed.

You know that you’re getting older when - Your mind makes commitments, your body can’t carry out. A dripping faucet causes an uncontrollable bladder urge. You look forward to a dull evening. Your favourite part of the newspaper is “20 years ago today”. You sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going. Your knees buckle and your belt won’t.

The little grey haired lady, you helped across the street is your wife. You regret all those mistakes you made resisting temptation. You’re 17 around the neck, 42 around the waist and 102 around the golf course. Your back goes out more often then you do. A fortuneteller offers to read your face. You sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there. Your pacemaker makes the garage door go up, when you see an attractive member of the opposite sex, You have too much room in the house and not enough in the medicine cabinet. You turn out the lights for economic reasons not romantic reasons. You know all the answers but nobody asks the questions.

Until next time
