Where there’s smoke…

- By Gordon Lambie

The Nichols and Hamilton buildings on the Bishop’s campus were briefly evacuated on Monday morning after dust from renovations on the third floor of the Hamilton Building caused a shop-vac to overheat and smoke.

“There was never any fire,” said Carson Brooks, manager of campus security.

Brooks explained that the situation was rapidly brought under control and that although

the presence of several fire trucks on site might have made things look dramatic, they were present merely as a control measure. He added that the dust in question was a byproduct of drilling to run wires into the renovated classrooms and the vacuum that overheated was meant as a way to control the amount of dust in the air.

Students and staff were able to return to the building shortly before 9:30 a.m.
