Magazine writer and runner Noel Paine enjoys promoting the sport

- A Runner’s Mind Christine Blanchette

Though running and writing have always been in a tie for first on Noel Paine’s list of favorite endeavors, they are not going to bump his two-yearold daughter, Morgane from number one in his heart. In fact, Paine has found a way to transition to fatherhood without having to give up his favorite pastimes. In a recent radio interview on CJMQ radio based in Sherbrooke, Quebec, the Ottawa resident talked about his passion for running and writing while offering a few tips for new running dads and moms.

In a recent radio interview, your agent wanted to know of Paine, which came first - running or writing. Paine said, “I never was asked this question before, it came about the same time, believe or not. I have been running and writing for as long as I can remember. I was 11 or 12 years old, and the first time I ran a race was on the track.”

Running for 30 years now, the experienced Masters runner has run everything from the 100 meters to 100km. “I still like to push myself from the short distance to super long. I don’t have a favorite distance,” he said, adding, “I still enjoy (running) 800m and 1500m for the speed.”

When Paine isn’t running, he likes to promote the sport in his “No Paine, No Gain”, blog and he writes for Canadian Running Magazine. In his posts, he enjoys profiling runners from elite to the weekend warrior, and gear reviews – or, everything to do with running.

He has written articles about running celebrities from Premier Justin Trudeau to Ben Johnson. “Ben Johnson was amazing, interesting interview”.

Paine also talked about his role as a running dad. He notes, “It has been a struggle and a relief. It has been a transition but running has been an outlet because I love it. (The struggle) is to try to fit a run in as a running dad can be difficult.”

On his role as a running dad, I asked do you have any tips or advice to share with the readers:

Here are his tips:

1. Prepare yourself that you may not run when you want. Run when you can.

2. Get a stroller, share that time with your daughter or son, and transition yourself to new ways to run.

3. Ease back and enjoy whatever run you can get in.

“Running keeps me going. Running is my joy and sharing my passion with others,” he said.

Paine also shares one of his recipes here:

Thin crust red pepper, onion n cheese pizza.

Noel’s almost vegetarian pizza

•Round flat bread •Tomato paste •Red pepper •Red onion •Goat cheese •Shredded extra old cheddar •Nutritional yeast Spread half to full small can of tomato paste on a large thin flatbread pizza bread. Sprinkle finely chopped red pepper and red onion on top of sauce. Then liberally spread some nutritional yeast (can be found at natural food stores) adds a really nice cheesy/nutty flavour. Then spread shredded cheddar and top with a little drop of goat cheese here and there. Bake at around 375 until cheese melts and crust begins to get a bit crusty and turn on broiler if needed at end to really melt that cheese.
