of habits but, it also may mean the saving of a child’s life. While most opt for a hallway installation, it may not be enough and if located in the bedroom, it will likely be heard immediately if a fire occurs in that room.

According to information distributed by the Potton Fire Department, a closed door can retain a fired for 20 minutes without the occupant being aware of what is happening beyond the door. They go on to explain that decomposition gases are just as toxic as they are flammable! That a room where the window would be opened 15 centimetres will burn in 4 minutes. Temperatures could reach over 500 degrees Celsius.

On June 15, the Potton Fire Department distributed smoke detectors along with a fire drill and assembly in the local elementary schools. The smoke detector given to the children from the Guardian Angel Program includes an integrated battery that lasts 10 years, has quick detection and easy installation. The Prevention Department even held a contest for parents and children in the installation of the smoke detector. The prize was the opportunity for the winning child to spend an evening with the firefighters during a practice at the Potton Fire Department.

“Our children are our greatest concern,” said Fortin. “The safety of all children is of upmost importance to the prevention department.”
