Nichols represents the best modern country has to offer

-

His baritone is impeccable and as usual Nichols delivers with brio. The witty, traditional country tune “Diamonds Make Babies,” may sound familiar to country music fans. The song, co-written by Chris Stapleton, Jim Beavers, and Lee Thomas Miller, was previously recorded by Dierks Bentley on his sixth studio album, Home. Both versions are excellent.

There’s the infectious “Girl in the Song,” on which Nichols name drops Tom Petty. You will love the moving ballad “We All Carry Something” which is Nichols’ personal favourite on this project.

The singer does a commanding job on this number about different life experiences. The conclusion is that what we live defines and shapes who we become. Keeping in mind that no matter how terrible it might get, we’re not going through it alone.

Another well-crafted number is the upbeat “I’d Sing About You.” This one is truly a highlight featuring some simple lyrics and steel-filled melody. Joe Nichols showcases his wide vocal range on the sultry ballad “Breathless.”

He is convincing on this positive number when he sings: “It’s so easy to slip out of touch/so that’s it girl I’ve had enough/i know you want me to/so tonight I’m leaving you/i’m leaving you breathless/biting your lip/leave you hanging on the heat of the next kiss.”

You will also recognize “Billy Graham’s Bible,” which was previously featured on his Crickets album. This is also a great number.

“This Side of the River” is another poignant story-song about life, appreciating it for what it is and being thankful for every minute of it. He shows his wilder side on “Tall Boys,” and he displays his rumbling baritone vocals on “Hostage.”

There’s the smooth and sultry ballad “So You’re Saying,” as well as a funny countrified version of the rap hit “Baby Got Back,” featuring Darren Knight.

Fans of Nichols’ live show will recognize his country interpretation of Sir Mix-a-lot’s “Baby Got Back.” Nichols has been performing this hit in concert. Nichols give a tongue-in-cheek reading of the song’s iconic chorus.

Joe Nichols has outdone himself, as there are no filler tracks on this collection. The songs are eclectic and refreshing. Throughout Never Gets Old, Nichols proves why he keeps being such a significant name in country music.

His aspiration to stay pertinent while remaining true to himself, as well as to his traditional country style, produces a perfect contemporary blend of real country music. Fans will appreciate the traditional sound, Joe Nichols’ mesmerizing vocals, all the work involved in this album. Country radio will get some fresh songs to replace the cookie cutter country provided by some of the actual singers. Now get this album and turn your volume up. It is summer and it doesn’t come any better that this!
